Unexpected tooth extraction emergency

tooth extraction emergency

Dental emergencies usually happen at the most unexpected moments. Whether it be acute pain or sudden onset of a broken tooth due to a fall, dental emergencies always involve pain and can drastically change your plans for the day.

Although usually the issue can be solved by removing just the tooth pulp, in some cases, the injury is so extensive that the only solution is to perform an emergency tooth extraction.

If you are near Miami Beach, our office offers a 24-hour service for emergency tooth extraction on the weekends, giving you instant relief no matter the hour.

In this article, we will explain how to identify the need for these procedures and what to expect from them.

What is an emergency tooth extraction?

Usually, dental extractions are treatments that are appointed after a thorough evaluation of the case. The dentist or dental surgeon will do the planning based on a clinical exam and different types of X-rays. Moreover, in some complex cases, a CT scan could even be necessary.

However, sometimes the tooth is in such a bad condition that the dentists must extract it immediately as leaving it inside the mouth could complicate the patient’s health status even further.

How to know if my tooth needs to be extracted immediately?

Although every dental treatment should be performed as soon as possible and delaying it will just worsen the case, dentists usually perform an emergency tooth extraction only when there are other symptoms or conditions associated with the case that requires immediate medical attention.

The most common being severe pain that won’t stop even with painkillers, severe infection or abscess, extraoral swelling, and fiber.

How is the procedure done?

Luckily, an emergency tooth extraction is often a quick procedure.

When you arrive, the dentist will ask you a few questions regarding your tooth and your overall medical history to identify anything that should be considered before beginning the procedure, such as diabetes, hypertension, and allergies.

Afterward, he will take an x-ray to assess the position of the roots and the possible presence of an abscess associated with them.

Once this quick evaluation finishes, the dentist will use anesthesia to numb the mouth and extract the tooth with special tools.

After the extraction, he will place a sterile gauze pad over the surgery area, where the tooth was, and ask you to bite it down for 30 minutes. Lastly, he will give you some aftercare indications and a medical recipe.

Although it is better to preserve the tooth, this is not always possible. Therefore, an emergency forth extraction may be necessary. Fortunately, it is usually a simple procedure that will alleviate the pain quickly. Since emergencies can’t wait, you can visit our dental office in Miami Beach at any time during the weekends as our 24-hour emergency dentists are always ready to help you, no matter how unexpected your emergency might be.
